Introduction

My story dates back to when I was almost eight years old. My father passed away from cancer before his 34th birthday, and from the day I lost him, the childhood I had known was over. My mother was left with no financial security, three children to raise, and a lot of heart-ache. As the oldest of the three, I took on the role of raising my younger sister and brother. My mom had to work long hours, seven days a week, just to make ends meet. Watching her struggle, I made it my mission to become an independent woman who wouldn’t have to rely on a man to take care of me. I knew a big part of achieving that independence meant getting a good education, something my mom never had the opportunity to receive. I put my youth and the fun that should have come with it aside, making school work my number one priority. The focus on education paid off, allowing me to graduate high school with 4.2 GPA, followed by a 3.8 GPA and honors when I graduated from UC Berkeley with a psychology degree. My academic success allowed me to secure a job at a prestigious consulting company six months before graduating. I felt like I had finally achieved my goal: I was able to support myself without depending on anyone.
Fast forward 20 years. I continued to climb up the corporate ladder in several different jobs on my way to reach financial freedom and seemed to do very well. One would think that with all of my successes, I would have felt confident and able. But I didn’t. I felt like a fraud. I always thought it was a matter of time until someone found out I didn’t know what I was doing. I was afraid they would ask me to do something at work I didn’t know how to do. I never had the internal confidence to be ready to face any situation, regardless if I was prepared or not.
Looking back on everything, I can now say it was because I was never really taught about the value of self-worth and self-appreciation. I wasn’t given the support or praise I needed to establish a feeling of confidence in myself. I attributed any successes I accomplished to outside forces or just being lucky. I figured that anything I accomplished that came from working hard was due to pure luck, instead of realizing that who I was as a person along with my intelligence played a huge role in how things worked out for me. I internalized my failures and found myself afraid to take on challenges that I wasn’t 100% sure I would succeed in. I wasn’t interested in taking risks and I was afraid of change.<
Now, being older and wiser and a mom myself, I no longer fault my mother for the struggles I faced. I can look back and understand that she did the best she could.   I actually credit her for teaching me perseverance and how to work hard to provide for my family even during tough times.
The journey of trying to teach myself all the things I never learned as a kid has been long and challenging. I’ve learned that failure and success are joined together on the same path and one cannot exist without the other. I’ve learned that the ones who truly fail are the ones who end up giving up too early. I’ve learned that just because I feel fear doesn’t mean I should stop moving forward. Feel the fear and do it anyway. I’ve learned that self-love combined with a healthy lifestyle, such as eating healthy food, exercise, and sleep were just a few more things that can add to my success and happiness. Having these experiences and successfully learning from them made me want to help my kids and all kids by sharing my life lessons.
