ℚ Closer Than She Knows - Kelly Irvin

Today we have the pleasure of meeting up with author to talk about Closer Than She Knows (, Thomas Nelson, 352 pages), a Romantic Suspense.

"Irvin (“Every Amish Season” series; “Amish of Bee County” series) packs a lot into this Christian romantic suspense title—serial killers, gun control, faith in a family of nonbelievers, the pros and cons of parenthood, addiction, and posttraumatic stress disorder—but does so in a way that makes Teagan and Max feel like complex human beings with strengths, faults, and doubts."  —Heather Webb, Worthington Libs., OH (Library Journal)

📚 Segment 13: Mudlarks and the Silent Highwayman - Alan M. Clark

Welcome to the penultimate segment in the serialisation of Mudlarks and the Silent Highwayman, an Historical Supernatural Illustrated Novelette by (, IFD Publishing, 69 pages). A story of hope enduring in the midst of illness and death on the banks of the river Thames in 1884 Victorian London.

Trivia: The Port of London Authority (PLA) regulates all metal detecting and digging on the Thames foreshore (any scraping of the surface with any type of implement is considered digging) and any finds must be reported to the Museum Of London. On 17 December 2016, Tobias Neto found one of only 16 Victoria Crosses that were awarded to British soldiers on 5 November 1854 after the Battle of Inkerman (one of the earliest ever awarded), which has been narrowed down to belonging to one of two particular officers, and which is worth around £50,000. Since then regulations have been tightened, permits have increased in price, and, as of this year, mudlark licences which allowed digging of the foreshore up to a depth of 1.2 metres (3 feet 11 inches) are no longer being issued; standard licenses which allow digging up to 7.5 cm (3 inches) can still be purchased for £85 per year.

Trivia: mudlarking saw a revival after World War II when it became about treasure hunting and archeology, and in 1949, writer and archeologist Ivor Noël Hume started to explore the Thames foreshore. In 1956 he published 'Treasure In The Thames' which is considered an important resource to this day.

The grayness seemed to absorb Albert. His mind having nothing visual to grab onto, he lost all sense of direction and feared that he might make a circle, running into the boy again. Albert stopped and turned, saw the boy not too far away. He’d picked up his stick, gone back to poking at the mud, and didn’t appear to be a threat.

Clark's Jack The Ripper Victims series and his guest post "Nipper Dippers, Mug-hunters, and Bludgers: Dangers on the Streets of the Victorian East End". This series is from the point of view of the victims: who were they? What was life like for them in London of the time period? What were their struggles, their hopes, their regrets? What of the decisions they made in life might have delivered them into the bloody hands of the Ripper?

We hope you are enjoying Mudlarks and The Silent Highwayman; here is segment 9.

📚 Segment 8: Mudlarks and the Silent Highwayman - Alan M. Clark

Welcome to the eighth segment in the serialisation of Mudlarks and the Silent Highwayman, an Historical Supernatural Illustrated Novelette by (, IFD Publishing, 69 pages).

It's 1884 Victorian London on the busy and sewage-ridden Thames, which is also the source of small treasures for the poorest children in the City, the mudlarks.' Mudlarks and the Silent Highwayman is a story of hope enduring in the midst of illness and death.

If you missed the previous segments, you can catch up, find out more about the story, its serialisation and Alan M. Clark here, or jump to the segment you missed by using the links below.

Trivia: the mud of the river Thames is anaerobic (de-oxygenated) which means that objects thrown or lost in the river are well preserved. Over 90% of the Museum Of London's medieval metals collection comes from modern mudlarks, and, over the last 30 years, the museum has acquired over 90,000 objects recovered from the River Thames foreshore which is the longest archaeological site in Britain.

Enjoy the continuation of Mudlarks and the Silent Highwayman!
