Chapter One

The circumstances of the last few days were not only unbelievable, but life-changing. I fell, hard, for someone I barely knew. I almost died, twice, and I had a possible vision of myself as an all-powerful and out-of-this-world attractive guardian. But none of that mattered if I was going to die at the hands of my attacker.
Alone in the park and lured there under false pretenses, all I wanted to do was prevent my brother, Graham, from pummeling my quasi-boyfriend, Aiden, for something he didn’t even do. Not that he didn’t deserve a beating for other reasons, but I was mostly worried for Graham.
Someone tricked me, then attempted to kill me.
My last conscious thoughts were of Leo and waiting for him to come save me. Except he never showed up.
Leo. My guardian in more ways than one. He’d saved my life when I hadn’t even known I’d need him to, but where was he? How could I ever see him again if I was surrounded by nothing? The last thing I remembered was that creature pretending to be Aiden, causing agony with his chartreuse pain waves, then knocking me out when he pressed the pain to my forehead. I wasn’t sure if I’d passed out or something worse.
Maybe if I was somehow a guardian, Leo was here— wherever here was. I tried calling his name, more like screaming it, but nothing was coming out. A glance in the large, jeweled mirror floating in front of me told me my mouth was moving, but I heard no sound.
      Searing hot.
      My head was searing hot.
“Leo!” I called for him again as I reached up to my forehead, trying to make the burning stop. “Leo.”
I heard myself this time, which I took as a good sign, but then I heard a response.
      “Sophia.”
“My head. Leo, help. My face is burning.”
The heat instantly left me with those words, along with my vision of white and the throne. It spiraled away like water down a drain and everything went black again as I physically felt myself returning to earth. My eyes were closed and I didn’t want to open them as my last moments of consciousness crept back to me: the fight with Graham, chasing him down the street, him wanting to kick Aiden’s ass, hiding from my parents in a bush, going to the park to meet Aiden. I wished that was where the bad memories ended, but they went on.
The creature’s face was all over my thoughts. I couldn’t think of anything else but him, and the memory of the pain was so strong it was like I was feeling it all over again.
      Screaming.
All I heard were my own screams loud and clear. The creature, the ugly chartreuse color and the pain it brought… My eyes wouldn’t open. The burning sensation returned to my face, but this time it was on my mouth.
“Sophia, everything’s okay. You are fine. Don’t be afraid,” I heard after my screaming had stopped. That voice. That familiar voice. My eyes shot open.
Mya, my newly acquired guardian friend, sat like a vision ever so carefully at the side of my bed. She had her left arm slung over the back of my pillow while her right arm floated above my head with her fingers fluttering restlessly. It had been her dangerously warm hand on my forehead— not Leo’s.
“What? How did I… What’s going on?” My thoughts weren’t clear enough to form whole sentences and my breath was still coming out in hard pants.
“You’re in Fresh Springs, in your house, in your room. You were pretty badly injured on Monday night, but you’re doing much better now. I’m here if you need anything and I have strict instructions to not let you leave this house on your own, so before anything else is further discussed I’m going to need you to raise your right hand and swear to God that you won’t leave.”
I stared blankly at her, my eyes blinking too quickly to count how many times. First of all, what? Second of all, swear to whom now? I closed my eyes and kept them tightly shut for a few minutes, but it was no use. Mya was still there when I opened them again, looking as kind and patient as ever.
“Wait, don’t you mean I was injured tonight? Not Monday night?”
“Ah ah ah,” she scolded. “Raise your right hand and swear first.”
      “But what if—”
      “No.”
      “How can I—”
      “Hand.”
“Fine.” If she wasn’t the only one around to answer my questions I would’ve punched her. I cut my right hand through the air with noted effort, feeling extremely sore all over. So sore, in fact, it felt like I hadn’t moved in days. “I swear to God I won’t leave this house.”
Mya beamed at me as she moved in closer. “All right, dear Sophia. Ask me your questions.”
