When Lydia Blackwell visits her dying father for the last time, he reveals the deeply hidden truth about her mother. After the funeral, the stranger Derek Meade gifts her with a gorgeous antique purse. But before she has the chance to connect with the man who knew her father intimately, Lydia finds Derek murdered in his home.

Lieutenant Sonja MacIntosh is assigned to investigate Mr. Meade’s death, but her career on the force never prepared her for Lydia Blackwell. As Sonja works to solve the murder, Lydia takes the greatest risk of her life in leaving Chicago to search for clues to her mother’s past. Their instant attraction surprises them both, but even through the chaos Lydia can’t deny the intensity of her feelings for the strong willed Lieutenant.

Lydia’s possession of the antique purse throws her already chaotic life into a whirlwind of kidnapping, blackmail, vengeful mob bosses, and mind-numbing revelations. Through it all, Lydia must find the strength to accept herself – and those closest to her – despite their darkest secrets.

Chapter One

LYDIA QUICKLY PUT DOWN the phone, grabbed her keys, and raced outside to her car. She’d expected the news, but still the feeling was strange. William Blackwell was near the end of his life.Lydia climbed into her new Jeep Cherokee she had just bought the month before and sat at the steering wheel, lost in thought. For a brief moment, she hugged the steering wheel, put her head down, and cried. Finally, she sat back and dried her eyes. As the autumn leaves danced around her windshield, she saw her father’s face as she’d seen it so many autumns before. How he loved this time of year. Her father used to say it made him feel so alive, witnessing the changing of the seasons. If only he could feel that now. Lydia took a deep breath, put her car in reverse, and backed out of her driveway.
During the drive to Kenilworth, Lydia reflected on her father’s life, wondering what it all meant to him. She knew he would never tell her, but there had to be something missing. Rarely was there anyone of importance in the house, especially women. Lydia could only assume that her mother had been the real love of his life and he was just too devastated to ever marry again. Lydia had no memories of the woman. After all, she had only been three years old at the time of her mother’s fatal car accident. The void left by Cassandra Lexington Blackwell’s absence, however, was one that Lydia felt every day of her life.     [...]
