CHAOS. HOPE. LOVE.

By Misha Gerricke

“Stupid Homer,” I muttered and knocked it down from its perch while strolling past. Customers enjoyed moving books about, arranging the ones they liked on top so they would draw other customers’ attention.
Why anyone liked that story went above my understanding. It was ridiculous. Of all the ancient texts to survive this long, it had to be the Iliad that lasted. Shaking my head in disgust, I turned the open/closed sign around and unlocked the door.
It was quite chilly, so I went back in and stoked a fire to life. I glanced toward the Iliad, then picked it up from the floor. Just as I was about to toss it into the fire, Betty walked in.
A dear old bird. She was somewhere close to eighty, but didn’t look a day over sixty. And as sharp as could be. Her eyes peered through her glasses at the book in my hand. “What are you doing?”
“Er…” I shrugged and tossed it aside. Even now, two years after I bought this place, I still didn’t have a believable explanation for my aversion to Homer. Hard to explain it reminded me of that one time I started the Trojan War. “Nothing. Really.”
Betty’s eyes sparkled. “You should read it.”
Pass. “I’ll get to it one day.”
“Young people,” Betty grumbled and sauntered off in search of something to read.
“Mortals,” I muttered under my breath. Make ’em a few decades older than other people and they think they know everything.
The bell over the door rang. A rich, warm sound, but a chill shot up my spine. I stilled. Deep inside me, a sort of music played. I could hear it when no mortal could. I felt it into the depths of my soul.
The music was a sign of someone with Olympian blood nearby, and each one’s was unique. This person’s heartsong felt strange. Grave, but happy at the same time. Yet not discordant, unlike mine. I didn’t recognize this heartsong, but just the fact that I felt it was enough. I had my back turned to someone who could be here to take me down.

Twisted Earths [1]

A collection of tales from Untethered Realms, a group of speculative fiction authors. The stories are as varied and rich as the types of soil on this and other planets--sandy loam, clay, knotted with roots and vines, dreaded paths through unexplored planets, and in enchanted forests, lit by candlelight and two moons.

Patchworker 2.0 by M. Pax
Specialists with digital interfaces are the only ones who can distinguish between biological energy and mechanical pulses, and "patch" AIs, which hold the world together. Patchworker Evalyn Shore meets up with an AI with deadly intent.

Lady Death by Cherie Reich
Umbria, a beautiful and powerful swordsmith, is given an impossible task by her brother Leon when he asks, "You are the assassin. Are you scared to destroy Death when you are up to your elbows in it?"

In The Know by Angela Brown
Jacob, a loyal family man is struggling to stay out of debt when he's hired to report on big plans for a future Detroit. He's given a mysterious manila envelope with instructions to "open it alone" or pay the price. With switchback twists you won't see coming, a debt of a much steeper cost is what he just might end up paying for his involvement.

The Day of The Flying Dogs by Catherine Stine
A sinister tale of brilliant, troubled NYC high-school student, Theo. He experiences a day at Coney Island that includes drugs, delusions, a lonely capybara, Nathan's hotdogs and a mind-bending lesson in our very twisted universe.

The Ole Saint by Christine Rains
A story at once sweet, horrific and heartrending. Ezra longs to fit in and have boys stop calling him witch and freak, yet his unique supernatural skill sets him apart, and the last gift from The Ole Saint cinches the deal.

The Malachite Mine by Graeme Ing
A gripping, scream-inducing ride. Whatever was Mary thinking when she accepted her husband's gift of a most terrifying twenty-first birthday celebration in an abandoned Russian mine?

A Grand Purpose by River Fairchild
Rosaya and her cousin, Drianna are soon to be married off, but Rosaya is unhappy with her assigned match. She's much more intoxicated by the older Firrandor, a wizard she hardly knows. When Rosaya is accused of killing an oracle boy, all bets are off, not only for her love, but her freedom.

Ghostly Guardian by Gwen Gardner
Indigo and her rib-tickling ghost-busters must travel to a dangerous pirate-laden past in order to unearth a curmudgeonly eighteenth century spirit that is plaguing the Blind Badger Pub.

Red Earth and White Light by Misha Gerrick
Emily, a young ghost bride has long haunted a house. She longs to cross over into the afterlife, but she's trapped in memories of lilies and betrayal.
