The Series: The Cycle of the Six Moons

The Starriest Summer [1]

Fifteen-year-old Michelle saves the world on a daily basis…with her trusty video game controller, of course! Naturally, she jumps at the chance to play an experimental virtual reality game.

The beautiful fantasy world of Starrs? Check. The power to mold matter? Check. No reset button? Wait, she didn’t sign up for this!

Turns out Starrs is really real, and to make matters worse, Michelle’s interference awakens the Cycle of the Six Moons, a series of devastating trials that will devour the universe.

Fighting the apocalypse was way easier when danger stayed on the other side of the screen, but Michelle finds a secret weapon in her new-found powers. She uses them to rescue the crown prince of a powerful magic kingdom from their sworn enemies, a technologically-advanced cult that strives to eradicate magical blood.

Michelle starts to fall for Prince Jayse, the only one who believes Michelle to be a savior rather than a curse. But not even video games could prepare her for what the cult has in store for them…

from Chapter One

The Machine

My parents must’ve always had an inkling that my brother was a genius. Too bad they can’t see the “evil” tacked onto the “genius” because they’re now laughing their way down Tahitian docks.
“Now that Aaron’s home from college,” my mom told me, “your dad and I are going off on a trip!”
Yeah, because they’re too cheap to take their kids with them. If I had a camera, I would’ve captured evidence of my brother hauling the electronics into the garage, then I would have proof that geek college turned my brother into a schizoid. If he paid attention to normal people’s needs, I wouldn’t have to survive off scraps.
My stomach rumbles like the center of an earthquake. I drag my feet downstairs and gaze at the dusty TV stand, where spotless shapes indicate the former resting places of the large flat screen and game consoles. My brother even swiped the DVD player, speakers, and all the lamps. Anything with a plug or battery, small enough to carry or push, he’s abducted. Summer vacation is miserable without my video games.
I saved the world twice last week. Then my brother had to pull this crap.
I wobble into the kitchen, then the air conditioning clicks off and the house falls silent. For the thousandth time, I open the fridge door, hoping that it has magically refilled itself, or is growing some edible fungus. Mmm, mushrooms.
The smell of wet cardboard rolls out. Inventory of what might save me from keeling over: a damp, empty carton of eggs, red-tinged slimy lettuce, and enough condiments to stock a sandwich shop. Too bad it’s not enough for an actual sandwich.
I look past the counter where the microwave should be, and glare at the door leading to the garage. Crookedly taped there is my brother’s handwritten note, bold in red Sharpie: Hey Michelle, I’m working DON’T BOTHER ME!!! K? Love you!
My stomach growls again—the only sound in the house. For the first time in two weeks, I can’t hear Aaron hammering away on his mad scientist experiment.
Not once has he even offered to drive me downtown in his car that he so affectionately calls Padmé, which now sits idly on the driveway to make room for his mystery science project in the garage. I’m a few months from the legal driving age, and have never put keys into an ignition, so unless I want to kill Padmé and myself, I’ll have to disturb my brother’s work.
I put my ear to the garage door. The silence chills me. I tap softly with my knuckles. He doesn’t answer. Finally, I knock louder.
“Aaron? I know you said not to bother you, but I’m really hungry, so could you take me grocery shopping?”
No answer. I bang on the door so hard that it rattles, but still nothing. Is he even in there? I reach for the doorknob—
“Ow!” I scream, stumbling back and swinging my hand far from the zapping doorknob. My fingers continue to burn from the buzz, and I kick at the bottom of the door in frustration. What’s he trying to hide from me, anyway? It’s not as if moving the electronics was much of a secret.
“Fine! I’m stealing your car!” I wait for him to open the door, but even this threat does nothing.

An Eclipsing Autumn [2]

Deciding last minute to stay in Starrs, Michelle continues her epic adventure as Goddess. After all, learning how to save the world sure beats a year of pre-calculus. With her friends by her side, Michelle travels to a city of scholars to learn the lore of the Cycle of the Six Moons.

At first, the exotic retreat turns romantic, as Michelle spends her free time exchanging sweet letters with the crown prince, Jayse. But, during her studies, Michelle learns something that drastically changes her game plan. Powerful blood must be spilled to end the Cycle…blood that only runs through her veins and the prince destined to fall in love with her.

During a celebration honoring their enlightenment, Michelle and Jayse are whisked off to a rogue city as trophies of a tournament, where only the strongest can claim a taste of their blood. Gallant as ever, their guardian, Gediyon, enters to prevent harm to his friends. Unfortunately for the contestants, the Cycle’s latest trial prevents everyone from waking from a cursed slumber…

Excerpts

from Chapter One

A Treacherous Pilgrimage

I never thought that the first time I’d ride on a train, it would be on a pilgrimage. Maybe on a school trip, or fulfilling my childhood fantasies and running away from home, but not to learn how to save the world.
I’ve never even taken the BART back home, which I know is nowhere near as luxurious as this cabin. Here, no one would dare let me ride like the normal person I was back home. I am the Goddess of Starrs, after all—the Creator of the Cycle of the Six Moons, but I’m not even sure what that means yet.
We’re still passing over the Intercontinental Highbridge. For hours, I sat by this open window, watching fluffy clouds drift in and block out the stars. I gazed at the twin moonlight dancing on the waves of the horizon; now they’re hiding behind the clouds and I can only see the reflection of the cabin on the glass.
Even though the night sea breeze is refreshing, I start to shiver. I slide the single-pane window shut with a satisfying click, and moments later, rain pellets the glass. From the interior light, the raindrops look like amber snakes slithering across the pane.
I sigh and lean back into my ridiculously comfortable chair, drawing my nails through the pleasant velveteen armrest. The mingling sounds of the rain, rumbling train tracks, and distant waves should be enough to lull me to sleep, but I still have a lot of caffeine in my system from dinner. Plus, I never could fall asleep easily.
I gaze at the quiet cabin. Now that the window is closed, I remember why I wanted to open it so badly in the first place. The plush upholstery is heavily perfumed and sickeningly sweet.
It’s a good thing I’m not alone on my journey. Seven others have joined me from Arriscyal, including their prince. Jayse is slumped in a chair across from me, sleeping, his hair perfect in the golden light. The burgundy, silk-lined blanket has slipped from his grasp, and around his neck, I see a thin sparkling chain and a softly glowing blue stone.
For the past day, we’ve all counted on that stone to tell the time. It goes by Arriscylean time, and there’s no way to adjust it to each time zone we pass, but some simple math does the trick.Another clock face on the back of the stone barely moves.
I rise from my seat. A dribbling snore comes from the other side of the first-class cabin, and I hear one of the teenage soldiers—Launce or Nichols—mutter about silverware in his dreams. No one makes any coherent speech, so I guess they’re all asleep too.
I hover over Jayse and watch him breathe.
Yeah, that’s a pretty creepy thing to do, but really, I want to check the time.
