Synopsis
Lieutenant Jack Morro has just days to go before being sent home from the war in Vietnam. But after inadvertently learning of evidence of a conspiracy involving his captain, he is hit by the captain’s “friendly fire” in the midst of battle. He is left for dead but is only wounded, captured by the Viet Cong, and imprisoned. When Jack is reported killed in action, his fiancé, Diane—a rising New York journalist—plunges into alcoholism. A media giant named Vidal helps her recover, and Diane falls in love with him. But Vidal has secrets—including a connection to Jack’s supposed “death.”However, Jack is alive, and after a year of imprisonment, he manages to escape. But he comes home to find Diane married to Vidal and his life still in peril from the information he learned in Vietnam.
Vidal, Jack, and Diane find themselves wrapped in a web of romance, deceit, and danger—and none of them will escape unscathed.
Author Q&A
A very warm welcome to Samuel Jay, thank you for joining us on BooksChatter! What was the inspiration for Deception?
"Vietnam and finding nothing that would be comparable. How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?
Lieutenant Jack escapes from prison in Vietnam and he's stunned by what he finds on his return. Media giant Vidal, Jack, and Diane find themselves wrapped in a web of romance, deceit, and danger—and none of them will escape unscathed. Vidal has a secret bind with Jack's suspected death."
"I did want to write about war. However, I was not in the military so none of this would reflect on myself."The first thing that draws me to a book is its cover. Can you tell us about your cover for Deception - why you chose that concept and who the artist is.
"I chose the cover because I wanted to show a love story triangle. The artist was a combo of my artist, Carol Mealy, and David Jensen who submitted several possibilities before we chose this version."Why should we read Deception and what sets it apart from the rest?
"I think it's a good read because there is nothing I could find that is anywhere like it. What sets me and it apart is the story line, nothing like I could find anywhere. Can you tell us something quirky about Deception, its story and characters?
I wanted to create a hero/heroine plot dampened by seeming tragedy and an apparent rescue by a third person. I got the apparent tragedy with a sensible plot. I inserted the third person masked by his inherent evil ways."
"Nothing quirky, peculiar, here."Who would you recommend Deception to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?
"I would recommend this book to adult males and females, especially those who are married because 'Deception' is the focus of the book. No disclaimers; my intended audience is wide (except I would say young ages) since the book has very little boundaries."What do you like to write and read about? Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?
"I like suspense as a genre. I like to read Grisham and a Writer’s Digest reviewer wrote: “Move over John Grisham. Samuel Jay is a masterful storyteller.”"What is your writing process?
"The writing process takes time --- in my case two years for this book. Part of that time comes from working in my position as president of a water utility, which does allow me time working at home. I write at my desk, and fortunately get my ideas by going first with an outline based on what I see ahead of me, and then I work on the characters."What is in store next?
"I just finished this book so I will spend some time promoting it before I begin my search for my next book."And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you that you could share with us?
"I have no pets. Sorry."
