ℚ The Last Resort - Ember Leigh

Today we have the pleasure of meeting up with author to talk about The Last Resort (, The Wild Rose Press, Inc., 250 pages), a Contemporary Romantic Suspense.

Some praise for Ember Leigh’s work:

“…simering sensuality…”

“…will leave you in a breathless puddle!”

A very warm welcome to Ember Leigh; thank you for joining us on BooksChatter!

How much of yourself is reflected in your latest novel, The Last Resort, and how?

"I think in any book that I write, a large part of myself is reflected just as a general baseline. It’s impossible not to reflect some part of my insides through my novels.

That said, Rose is the heroine I am LEAST like, so writing her was difficult because I am not a strictly regimented, military-minded sort of gal. But I could relate to her trauma in some way (even though my own father didn’t kidnap me and take me on the run with him across the US for a couple of years).

I think parts of the accumulated observations of life and living do tend to seep out onto the page, no matter who the hero/heroine is."
Why should we read The Last Resort and what sets it apart from the rest? What makes your book unique?
"What I love most about The Last Resort is the focus on the unconventional. I won’t lie, I tend to write more career-oriented heroines than anything else. But this book is the biggest jump away from conventional romance in that respect. Rose openly doesn’t want to have children, and either does Garrett. Sometimes I feel like that’s a no-no in romance, but there are plenty of people like that in the world too!

Yet Rose still dedicates her life to rescuing children, despite knowing that she personally does not want to be a mother (which makes her posing as Emmy’s mother for the duration of the story even more interesting!). Both Rose and Garrett prioritize their careers, and have no plans of settling down in a farmhouse by the old creek to raise kids. I like that approach to life (it’s totally where my life is leading!), but I also like to represent other types of heroes and heroines. Rarely in an Ember Leigh novel will you find the resolution including marriage and pregnancy. They’re all Happily Ever After’s, just in a less traditional sense."
Can you tell us something quirky about The Last Resort, its story and characters?
"Rose is named Rosalind Ellis Delaney. Her initials are RED. Yes, I did intend that! She’s the reddest Rose out there. She’s got such a delicate name, but she pricks HARD. And that’s what I love about her. She could take down men twice her size just because they look at her and think “Aw, she’s just a pretty little woman.” Yes, she’s pretty, but she’s also a Marine, a bounty hunter, and a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner."
What do you like to write and read about? Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?
"My main genre is contemporary erotic romance, but occasionally I’ll take a stab at other sub-genres.

This is my first romantic suspense novel, and I have some other suspense novels in the pipeline too.

I’ve started a New Adult series which isn’t quite ready to see the world yet, and I’ve been elbow-deep in a UFC series that will be releasing with Loose Idblo later this year."
What is your writing process?
"Write whenever I can! I am a freelance writer as my day job, so I fit in my romance novels around those projects. Right now, my workload is particularly heavy, so I don’t have nearly the time that I crave to work on my WIP’s. But I work mostly on one story at a time: that is, first-drafting one novel at a time, though various stories can be in revision at once.

I work on the story that is banging around inside my skull like a cranium full of pinballs—whatever story is rocking around that loudly deserves my attention. Thankfully, the stories tend to get raucous one at a time. I just don’t usually have much downtime between them before the next urgent novel slides in to replace it!"
What is in store next?
"I have my first-ever UFC series launching later this year; each book will be standalone that feature sexy, built fighters as they confront dark pasts and fall in love. I cannot WAIT to share these books with the world! And later on down the road I’ll be launching a musician-inspired series, following the various members of a famous band and all the different trysts and tribulations they experience. One of those books will be my first ever single-dad romance, and I’m so excited to share THAT one, too!"
And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you that you could share with us?
"My father has a Husky/Shephard mix named Storm. She was a rescue pup who was discovered during—you guessed it—a storm. My dad adopted her and she lives with him, so I see her at least once a week. She’s zany and overexcited and extremely wily. Her blue eyes will see through to your soul.

Here she is with my husband when we went for a winter walk late last year. That’s our truck in the background, and the way it’s framed with the setting sun makes it look like a Silverado ad! Ha! I should contact Chevrolet to let them know they should use this photo for promotional purposes."
And here are those gorgeous blue eyes.

Thank you so much for sharing, Ember; it was a pleasure hosting you today!

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it does not fail me just as much as this particular one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, nonetheless I actually believed you would probably have something useful to talk about. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something you could fix if you were not too busy looking for attention.
