Today we have the pleasure of meeting up with author Cara Bristol to talk about Mated with the Cyborg (3 January 2016, Cara Bristol, 141 pages), an Erotic Sci-fi Romance, book two of the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series.

What was the inspiration for Mated with the Cyborg?

"I love cyborgs.  They are human beings with computer enhancements.  They are alpha males, yet they become vulnerable when they meet the heroine.  When they fall in love, they fall hard.

Most of the cyborgs sci-fi romances I’ve read involve conspiracies in which the cyborgs were created against their will to serve the government.  I wanted to do something different.  My cyborgs are spies; they’re covert cyber operatives whose mission is to defeat terrorism in the galaxy, which was inspired by modern day threats."

How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?

"One of my goals is to bring romance back to the erotic romance genre.  I read many erotic romances where the story and the love interest takes a back seat to the sex.  I want to read about heroes who are heroic, who love, respect, and protect the heroine.  That’s what I’m trying to do in my writing, particularly with this series.  The eroticism grows out of the relationship the characters have with one another."

The first thing that draws me to a book is its cover.  Can you tell us about your cover for Mated with the Cyborg - why you chose that concept and who the artist is.

"There is quite a lot of subtlety in the cover.  First, the focal point is a bare-chested military man to show that cyborgs are human.  They’re not tentacled aliens or robots.  Lol.  The woman behind the hero is veiled because in the story the heroine forced to cover up for a very specific reason, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

The awesome Sweet ‘n Spicy Designs did the covers of both books in the Cy-Ops series (as well as other books of mine)."

Why should we read Mated with the Cyborg and the Cy-Ops series; what sets it apart from the rest?

"As I mentioned, in most cyborg romances, an oppressive government forces the cyborgs into military service.  In Mated with the Cyborg, the cyborgs are cyber operatives, spies who work for a covert paramilitary organization who are called in when everything all else has failed.
They’re fighting to save the galaxy from terrorism.  Think of them as a cross between James Bond and the Terminator (from Terminator 2, the good one, not the bad one from the first movie, lol.)"

Can you tell us something quirky about Mated with the Cyborg, its story and characters?

"So far, there are two books in the science fiction romance series.  In each case, I extrapolated what might exist in the future from what exists today.  For instance, today there are automobile “chop shops” where stolen vehicles are broken down and sold for parts.  In Mated with the Cyborg, I created a space shuttle chop shop.  In Stranded with the Cyborg, the first book, I projected what commercial space flight will be like by what commercial airline travel is like.

Since cyborgs are men who have been modified by computer/mechanical parts, I wanted to emphasize their humanness so their names are variations of “man:” Kai Andros, Brock Mann, Dale Homme."

Who would you recommend Mated with the Cyborg to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?

"I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi, romance and/or alpha heroes.  Mated with the Cyborg is an erotic sci-fi romance, so it does contain explicit sexual scenes; however, there’s nothing kinky in the Cy-Ops romance series.  (Now if you read my Rod and Cane Society spanking romance series, that’s another matter)."

If you could / wished to turn Mated with the Cyborg and the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series into a movie, who would be your dream team?

"Well, the cyborg hero would have to be played by somebody big and buff like “The Rock” – Dwayne Johnson.  I think Sandra Bullock could play any of the heroines.
I’d want somebody like George Lucas or Steven Spielberg to direct it."

What do you like to write and read about?  Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?

"Cy-Ops is my second sci-fi romance series.  The Breeder trilogy was the first.  I’ve also written paranormal, fantasy, contemporary, and spanking romance.  I read all those genres, and even some historical, which I don’t write.  I’ve also written a nonfiction book – Naughty Words for Nice Writers, a sex scene thesaurus for romance authors."

What is your writing process?

"I get a story idea and as I think about it, the characters start to talk to me.  I get snippets of dialogue and the opening scene starts to take shape.  When I know enough for three or four chapters I start writing.  As the characters develop, they direct the story.  However, I almost always know the ending at the beginning.  So I know the destination—I just have to figure out how to get there.  .

When I’m working on a first draft, my daily goal is 2,000 words (eight pages).  It takes me half again as long to rewrite, edit, polish and proof as it does to do the first draft.  So if a first draft takes two months, revisions take another month before the manuscript is ready to send to my editor. I write only one first draft at a time, but I often have a first draft in the works while I’m in editing another."

What is in store next?

"The next Cy-Ops sci-fi romance!  I don’t know how many books will be in the series, but I do have to write Dale Homme’s and Carter Ayme’s stories.  They’re secondary characters in Mated with the Cyborg.  I think Dale will be next."

And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you that you could share with us?

"I’m including a photo of my cat [Hannah].  She has always liked to hide in bags.  I think she just likes paper.  Lol. "
