Teaser: Exclusive Excerpt
After I got my books back to my room, I went over to the law library to see if I still had a job there. My boss looked me over. “Are you dating any law students?” she asked me.“No,” I told her. I thought about reminding her that the problem was that I hadn’t been dating Darcy Fitzwilliam. Then I figured that the less I said, the better.
“That’s a pity, if you were dating one, then the others wouldn’t be asking you out and getting irritated with you while you’re working.” I could see now that she was amused by me. I guessed that meant I was hired back.
“You could put me on a shift when there are fewer single guys in here?” I suggested to her.
“Wouldn’t it be better if I put you on a shift with the maximum number of single guys?” she eyed me speculatively. “So that one of them would become your boyfriend and protect you from the rest?”
“You’re assuming I’m interested in guys,” I pointed out to her. “What if I’m into girls?”
“There is no way I can possibly ask that question, and still call myself a professional,” she pointed out, arching her brow.
“I swear to you, no one of either gender is going to make a scene with me the way Darcy Fitzwilliam did last year,” I promised. “This is a whole new year, and I’m not going to have anyone pestering me.” I thought of Eddie. “Besides, I might be sort of starting a thing with an old friend of mine. If it works out and I’m seeing someone, no one can take offense at my saying no to a date, because I’m already taken.”
