Ashes [3]

This wasn’t a fight against evil or a bloody civil war, it was a plague. The worst plague in the history of the world. This was a healer’s domain, not mine. Joshua’s war. So why did I feel the same angst as I did before battle?

AbgailCross--The Avant Champion--embarks on her most time-sensitive quest as the Omega Plague claims lives across the world. With her friend, Baird Fox, and the Captain of Guard, Coco DeFay, she travels to Kovia in search of components for a magical cure. Can she assemble the pieces before time runs out?

Author Q&A

What motivated you to write a fantasy series?
"Fantasy novels are a wonderful way to escape into a world so different from our own, yet with some of the same challenges—fear, insecurity, uncertainty, danger, and loss.  Fantasy characters battle extrinsic demons as well as their own intrinsic demons.

I’ve enjoyed many of the popular fantasy novels: Tolkien, Rowling, Maas, Hobbs. Their stories of epic battles and heroes overcoming overwhelming odds are inspirational."
What is different about your fantasy novel?
"What if a world was at peace—a peace tenuously created through the use of magic thousands of years ago?  And every thousand years the woven fabric of that magic becomes brittle?  When this happens, The Avant Champion must be summoned to defeat an ancient evil to maintain peace.  What sacrifices would such a person have to make and would they be willing to make them?

The Avant Champion series has action, adventure, magic, battles, giants, brownies, man-eating octopi, wizards, ghosts, romance, and a strong heroine."
What do you enjoy about your fantasy series?
"I like the growth and evolution of the main character—Abigail Cross.  In book one, we see her first recognizing her role as something greater than any aspiration she has for herself.  By book two, she’s helping the Queen of her country with a civil war.  By book three, she struggles to balance her many roles—mother, chemistry professor, and strong arm of the Queen, even as she rushes to stop the spread of a deadly plague.  In book four, her involvement in world affairs becomes intercontinental as a rival king invades her country.

I’ve also enjoyed the transition of Malakai from a supporting character to a main character.  He has his own backstory in a separate novelette and then a companion story (The Avant Champion book 3.5) in Brothers’ Bond.  By book 4, he’s an integral main character.  His humor is endearing and his struggles are captivating."

About the Author

Christina is a practicing physician, mother of two boys and a terrier, and wife to a caring and supportive husband.

“I grew up reading Tom Clancy, Michael Crichton, and the Bourne books. I write seeking to create that level of action and intrigue but with female heroines. I love the quote, ‘She needed a hero. So she became one.’ My novels have empowered women overcoming powerful obstacles and the strong men who support them.”
