Sergeant JP Grimm didn't pull the trigger. Now his Marine brothers are dead. All victims of a child in a suicide vest...a child that resembled Sgt. Grimm's very own. But how are you supposed to take a child's life? How can you kill someone that looks just like your own son?
Those same hazel eyes he saw in his scope continue to haunt him long after he left the desert death lands as he tries to reconnect with his son, Adin. JP battles another war at home against PTSD and the worthless, dejected thoughts that he is the reason his friends are dead. His wife, Lisa, struggles to let her stubborn husband work it out on his own terms. She does all she can to give him space, support, and strength—but her love can only go so far.
As the world shows signs of impending doom from a weakening magnetic field and flaring sun, JP, too, shows signs of his own impending doom. After pushing everyone away, JP must face his nightmares to restore his relationship with his son, save his marriage, and save himself before the modern world burns out in a fiery, electromagnetic disaster.

“Wooow!” he whispered, taking in the tall, rusty trees with the leaves fluttering to the ground.
“Excited?” JP asked. The sparkle on his child’s face enthralled him.
“Bigfoot lives in there?” Adin asked, taking off his glasses and pressing his nose to the glass.
JP nodded and shrugged. “That’s what they say. You ready to go find out?”
“Let’s go!” Adin flung open his door, ready to jump out.
“Wait. Wait. Wait. Hold on, I got a little something for ya first.”
Adin twisted back into his seat. “Huh? You got me something?”
His father dug into the console for a moment but paused before he pulled his hand out. “Close your eyes.”
“Daaaad.”
“Come on. Close ’em. No peeking.”
“Fiiiine.” Adin rolled his eyes before he covered them with a loose hand, unable to contain his toothless grin.
“Adin! I can see you peeking.”
His son growled with a frustrated excitement, but then placed both hands tightly over his eyes, overly exaggerating his compliance. His father’s face sparkled.
Ornery little shit. “Just like his father.” JP heard his wife’s teasing voice in his head. He pulled out his hand and held it in front of Adin.
“Can I look?!”
“Not yet.”
“Errr.” Adin wiggled, barely able to contain himself.
“Wait…. Aw, maaan! I must’ve left it at home. I guess we’ll just have to go back and get it later,” he teased.
“Not Funny, Dad!” Adin slowly spread his fingers, seeing something slender in his father’s hand. Then he jerked his hands away from his face with a high-pitch squeal. “A knife! You got me a knife!”
A three-inch, black, folding blade on a matching handle and nylon sheath lay in JP’s hand.
Adin held out his vibrating hands and waited for his father to give him the knife.
“Now wait a minute, Bud. There’s rules,” JP said, pulling it back a smidge. “Number one: this is a weapon. You will treat it as such, meaning that you will not play with it. Number two: this is a tool. So, treat it like one. This means that you will take care of it, clean it, and make sure that you put it away somewhere safe when you are done with it. And number three: don’t hurt yourself! Or your mother will hurt me. Got it?”
Adin’s cheeks flushed with excitement. “Got it! I promise! Now can I hold it?”
“Careful, it’s sharp.” JP placed the knife into his son’s hands and admired him as he admired it. “All right. It goes in and stays in the sheath, and the sheath goes on your belt.”
Adin sheathed the knife and looped it on his belt, staring down at it like it was a piece of gold on his hip. Brimming with happiness, he looked up to his father, who beamed with pride.
“I love it, Dad!” He reached across the seat and hugged his father tightly. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I love you, so much!”
“I love you, too, Little Buddy.”
They embraced, hesitant at first. But JP slowly unwound, allowing his son to once again reach his heart with a wistful smile.
“Can we go find Bigfoot now?” Adin pleaded as he let go.
