A very warm welcome to Rea Frey; thank you for joining us on BooksChatter!

Here at BooksChatter we love music; do you have a music playlist that you used in Until I Find You , or which inspired you whilst you were writing it?
"I love to write while listening to music.  I listened to a lot of Billie Eilish, Billie Holiday, and Glass Animals to evoke a deeper, emotional mindset to tap into my protagonist, Rebecca Gray, and all the loss she has endured."
What was the inspiration for Until I Find You?
"This book actually came from a recurring nightmare I kept having where I would hear my baby cry in the next room, but when I went to pick up the baby, it wasn’t mine.  I loved this idea of a “swapped” child, but I knew that would be next to impossible to pull off.

Because I have struggled with my eyesight a lot in life, I got the idea to write from a blind woman’s perspective.  What would happen if this woman believed her child had been swapped…but no one would believe her?

That was the impetus for the story, and then I took it and ran."
How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?
"Ironically, I really keep myself out of stories.  I have zero idea what it’s like to walk through the world as a blind widow, but I am a mother and I know how any mother would go to the depths of the earth to save her child.

Bec is also a cellist, which I am not, though I used to play the saxophone.

Her character and world were very research-driven, as I wanted to represent the vision-impaired community as best as I could!"
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating Until I Find You?
"How crime is handled (or mishandled) when dealing with a vision-impaired person.  They are not given the same liberties as sighted people, and it’s not really discussed, which is unfortunate.  My aim was to raise awareness about this community in general and for us to start seeing more protagonists with disabilities on the page."
The first thing that draws me to a book is its cover. Can you tell us about your cover for Until I Find You - why you chose that concept and who the artist is.
"If I’m being honest, I didn’t love my cover when I first saw it!  I have zero say so in my covers!  However, with a few suggested tweaks, it definitely grew on me over time."
Why should we read Until I Find You and what sets it apart from the rest? What makes your book unique?
"I write about worst-case scenarios that could happen to parents… I love to have my readers question what they would do in any given situation, and I’ve been told my books will often keep readers thinking beyond the final page!"
Who would you recommend Until I Find You to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?
"I would recommend this book to anyone who loves domestic suspense, thrillers, or women’s fiction."
If you could / wished to turn Until I Find You into a movie, who would be your dream team?
Mandy Moore

"I have seen this book as a movie from the very first page!  I think Mandy Moore would actually make an incredible Rebecca Gray.  I haven’t gotten much beyond that! Ha!"
What has been your greatest challenge as a writer?
"To not compare myself to other authors.

To create space for being a mother and a business owner for writers while still making room for my craft.

To realize that your book is a product to sell and that publishing is a business…the days of “just writing” are over; now it’s about promotion, marketing, and wearing so many hats."
What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
"That my books aren’t realistic or “suspenseful” enough.

I’ve received so many wonderful compliments.  When someone says, “Your book is the best book I’ve ever read,” it’s just incredible.  Nothing better than that!"
What is in store next?
"My next book, SECRETS OF OUR HOUSE, comes out 2.8.2022.

Secrets Of Our House delves into what happens when a family is torn apart by secrets.

Desi Waters is trying to hang onto the last summer before her daughter leaves for college.  No matter that her twenty-year marriage is on the brink of divorce.  No matter that her daughter falls madly in love and decides she doesn’t want to go to college after all.  No matter that a decades-long secret Desi’s been keeping threatens to come out and ruin everything.

After a sudden plane crash threatens their livelihood, Desi must decide what secrets are worth keeping and what she will do to save her family–and ultimately, herself."
And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you that you could share with us?
"I have an 11-year-old Pomeranian chihuahua, Neruda, and we now have two cats, courtesy of quarantine and having an only child who needed some extra “friends” around.  But my absolute favorite person who is special to me is my daughter, Sophie!"
Lovely picture!  Thank you for sharing it with us, Rea.

  1. Great interview!!!
"I didn’t love my cover when I first saw it!" - There should have been bells on the cover ;-)
Personally, for me a book doesn't have to be realistic - it is a work of fiction!

I just finished this book - I LOVED IT!!!!! I seriously want to turn around and read it over again! I will be posting my review on the 13th.

  2. Geat interview! Really like the music video (referenced) and the photo of Rea and her daughter. This book rocks! Such an unusual and interesting scenario. Using blindness. Not your cookie-cutter mystery. A big WOW!
