Breathing hard, her entire body tingling in the aftermath, Cora melted onto his chest. She pressed her lips to the side of his neck, feeling blood pulse through the artery running along the side of it. His arm settled around her as they recovered.
After a moment, he said, “Who are you? Are you an angel or a demon? Am I in heaven or hell?”
Cora lifted her head to gaze into his eyes. Just looking at them nearly stole her breath. They were as blue as the sky on a clear summer day and filled with so many emotions that her heart ached for him.
“Neither,” she said. “You’re alive. It’s complicated.”
“Alive. I… I remember chopping wood, and then pain. Then nothing, until now.” He reached up to caress her face. “Who are you?”
“My name is Cora. I --”
“You liar! You said you’d wake me if anything changed,” Dr. Damp roared. Grasping Cora’s arm, he dragged her off John, and hurled her onto the floor. She gasped, covering her bare breasts.
“You deceptive little slut!” Damp roared. “I rescued you from the asylum. I gave you everything and let you take part in my experiments, and what do you do? Fuck the first corpse I bring back to life.”
Damp stood over her and raised his hand to hit her again, but John jumped off the table and grasped Damp’s wrist. “Don’t touch her,” John bellowed, flinging Damp across the room. He crashed into a glass cabinet filled with medicine bottles. Glass broke and medicine dripped onto the floor.
“What are you doing?” Damp said, advancing on John again. “I made you, and you will obey me.”
“Doctor, he doesn’t know what’s going on,” Cora said, standing and pulling on a lab coat that hung nearby on a hook. She buttoned it quickly.
“What do you mean, you made me?” John demanded, his eyes narrowed in confusion.
“You were dead. I brought you to life. You are my greatest accomplishment,” Damp said.
“Your accomplishment?” John demanded, still looking confused and stunned.
“Doctor, please calm down,” Cora said, approaching the men, afraid that both of them might lose control.
Damp lashed out, striking her hard in the face with the back of his hand. “Tomorrow, slut, it’s back to the madhouse for you. And as for you, my frisky son.” The doctor took a needle from a nearby equipment table and stuck it in John’s neck. Again John shoved Dr. Damp hard, but his strength was fading quickly.
“You’ll learn to obey me, John. You’ll learn to --”
Damp didn’t finish his sentence. Pain tore through his back. Blood filled his lungs. He turned, his blue eyes wide in shock and agony.
Cora stepped backward, tingling with horror and relief, the doctor’s blood on her hands. Droplets of it stained the lab coat. She had buried one of his razor sharp surgery tools into his back -- protecting her and John from his madness in the only way she could.
