A very warm welcome to Christine Church; thank you for joining us on BooksChatter!

To begin Christine has shared her music playlist for Beyond a Veiled Reflection with us - enjoy!
What was the inspiration for Beyond a Veiled Reflection ?
"I wrote the FIRST book in this series (Beyond Every Mirror) as a short story when I was 15 (which was a VERYYYYY long time ago). Eventually, it morphed into a novel throughout the decades. Once that book was out, I realized the story wasn’t over."
How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?
"I would say my intense love of 80s hard rock music is the part of me that is prominent and my inspiration for writing the short story a very long time ago, which eventually became the first book in this series.

Dane Bainbridge is the result of my musical love… which evolved with the book (which was first written in the 90s, then rewritten to today’s times). Originally, he was the lead singer of a “regular” hard rock band. But, with the 2010s the music I grew up with was now “classic” rock (ugh, I’m old), and I really didn’t like the new hard rock I was hearing.

Then I discovered a band called Pythia. I loved the combo of hard rock and classical/orchestra. So, I made Dane’s band into a “symphonic hard rock” band, came up with the whole stage set, routines, some songs, etc. It’s really worked with the voice of the stories, esp in this book (two) when Dane gets caught with one of the band’s gorgeous “violin gals.”"
The first thing that draws me to a book is its cover. Can you tell us about your cover for Beyond a Veiled Reflection - why you chose that concept and who the artist is.
"I do all of my book covers. I did graphic design for e-books back when e-books were new (a couple or more decades ago). I also do professional photography. I ended up combining both to create my own covers, so the characters on the covers come pretty close to how I see them when I write. Except Kaeplan (our “bad guy”). I had to grab a photo of a red-haired model and he isn’t exactly what I pictured Kaeplan to look like, but close enough. I use the same Dane and Meirah models on both Books two and three. Most people love the cover for Beyond Every Mirror, and I do too, but for Beyond a Veiled Reflection, I tried various covers, including Dane and Meirah wet, naked and mad at each other, but I couldn’t market the book anywhere with nudity on the cover (or rather what THEY considered nudity) and too many said it looked like erotica rather than fantasy romance, so I chose Dane & Meirah with Kaeplan creepily watching from the trees."
Why should we read Beyond a Veiled Reflection and what sets it apart from the rest? What makes your book unique?
"What doesn’t make my books unique would be an easier question. I am a forward thinker, so I don’t follow trends, or “rework” someone else’s book (All those Scottish Time Travels are making me dizzy). The fact I wrote the first book in this series as a short story wayyyyyyyyy back before fantasy romance even existed--there was NO self publishing back then—tells you how different it is. It’s not time travel, it’s time dimensional travel, and has its own worlds, rules, wizards, blood-drinkers, etc. I worked at getting Beyond Every Mirror published way back, and was told numerous times how great it was, but it didn’t fit in fantasy OR romance, and crossing genres was kept to the KNOWN authors, so no one took a chance, even though I received amazing praise from some big literary agents in NYC. Then, by the time the writing world caught up with fantasy romance, the genre became “over-saturated.”"
Can you tell us something quirky about Beyond a Veiled Reflection, its story and characters?
"The character names were just what came to my mind. They seem to name themselves in every book I write. In my other series, Fate of the True Vampires, there are a few characters I used to play in an online RPG back in the 90s. I’ve morphed them into my novels."
Who would you recommend Beyond a Veiled Reflection to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?
"Anyone with an open mind wishing something different, where they can disappear into a world with rich characters, strange worlds, beasts beyond imagination. Where time can be bent, people reincarnated at the will of a Wizard, and a love story so deep it defies the confines of time. Warning: You may get little sleep while reading this book! It’s fast paced and exciting."
What do you like to write and read about? Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?
"I pretty much stick to fantasy stuff, particularly vampires, and there’s always romance in one form or another. I do read other genres, however. I read thriller and horror, but I don’t write it. Although this series (Anachronistic Dimensions) is not stereo-typically “vampires,” and when Meirah is asked if she’s a vampire, she always answers “No, I’m a Mikairian.” But she does have fangs, and needs blood to live and the Wizards need human blood to keep their worlds alive."
What is your writing process?
"NIGHT! From midnight until 3-4 am. I know, it’s crazy, but I can only disappear from reality when everyone else sleeps. I’ve always been a night owl."
What is in store next?
"Book Three of this series released yesterday, February 28th . I am seeking reviews! Book Four will be titled “Beyond an Icy Tomb” and will be out near the end of this year. In the meantime, I am working on Book 6 of my Fate of the True Vampires series, and I am writing a time travel romance for a literary agent in NYC who read the first 10 pages, loved it, and wants to see the whole book."
And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you that you could share with us?
"That’s funny. The reason I say that is, you can tell just by my author photos. I don’t think I ever put up a picture of myself without my horse, Kobeejo. I’ve had him 15 years now and he is my absolute soulmate! I’ve always connected more with animals than people and when I met this horse, I KNEW we were meant to be together, and we were. I also have 8 rescued cats… my cat Lucy loves me like no cat ever has (and it’s amazing how much animals are attracted to me). Lucy needs to be ON me all the time and if I am not home from the barn (my horse is boarded and I care for him myself) by a certain time, Lucy gets upset. When I lie down, she has to lay on my chest, with her nose in my ear, purring. I rescued her TWICE and I think she knows it."

They are both gorgeous. Lots of cuddles to all eight cats as well :-)

  1. I LOVE how this book stop was done. Very classy. Thank you! Putting the first song from playlist is wonderful. It's the music I listen to EVERY night when I write. Though I prefer my hard rock, I can't listen to it while I write or I'd be singing and dancing rather than writing. LOL
