Today we have the pleasure of meeting up with author Naomi Boom to talk about To Entice an Earl (22 January 2018, The Wild Rose Press, Inc, 194 pages), a Regency Historical Romance, book three in the Entangled Nobility series.

Here at BooksChatter we love music; do you have a music playlist that you used in To Entice an Earl, or which inspired you whilst you were writing it?

"It’s kind of a hodge podge of random music, so be warned. Playlist I listened to while writing To Entice an Earl. [see below]"

What was the inspiration for To Entice an Earl?

"My first novel in the series had the Hero and Heroine as side characters. Naturally, I had to write their story because 1) I love the brother’s best friend trope, and 2) I loved Alexa and Maxon as side characters. The couple deserved a story, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result."

How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?

"I put a lot of my own personal insecurities into Alexa, the Heroine. She is a curvaceous girl, prone to mishap, and doesn’t believe Maxon could ever love her. Basically, I tossed in some of my own insecurities to give her depth. One line in particular resonates with me because it hits a little too close to home.

“How could someone like him, come to love someone like her? She spent too much time entrenched in dirt, too far below his standards.”
Basically, if Alexa feels insecure, you can almost guarantee it’s based on something I’ve dealt with.

It is also important to note that Alexa does not seem like the insecure, self-conscience sort to others. She hides it well. Upon reflection, Alexa is kind of just me."

The first thing that draws me to a book is its cover. Can you tell us about your cover for To Entice an Earl - why you chose that concept and who the artist is.

"My cover shows a young lady in a silvery blue dress standing in front of a table. There are red accents throughout the image, and a large tapestry on the wall. The cover is very elegant, and I can’t help but love it.

With that said, I had very little control over my cover. The artist, RJ Morris, has produced all of my covers and has done a phenomenal job. When she sent over the original cover, I had one complaint. I wanted her hair a bit messier. RJ Morris changed the hair style, and it was perfect."

Why should we read To Entice an Earl and what sets it apart from the rest? What makes your book unique?

"I could go on for quite a while on this subject, but first I will say that I am a modest person and I don’t just make claims because I wrote the novel. I have flaws and am constantly learning. But I will tell you, To Entice an Earl has witty repertoire, a story line to keep readers glued to the pages, and some humour mixed in.

I can also guarantee that I will never write a novel with annoying plots like a giant misunderstanding that somehow takes weeks to fix. Even in To Entice an Earl, I threw in one of the annoying misunderstandings and purposefully resolved it on the next page."

Gosh, I know exactly what you are talking about. It gets me screaming at the TV/book! Thank you for not doing that!

Can you tell us something quirky about To Entice an Earl, its story and characters?

"I stole the name Maxon from my nephew. I love the name so much but obviously cannot name a future child that, so I used it for the Hero in To Entice an Earl. I have another nephew named Alex, and the Heroine in to Entice an Earl is Alexa… there might be a theme to how I choose names."

Who would you recommend To Entice an Earl to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?

"My warning? I don’t write sexually explicit scenes. My goal is to write novels with every other vice, drinking, swearing, scandal, but if something happens, it’s behind closed doors. Hopefully, by the end of the novel, the reader won’t even notice a graphic scene’s absence."

If you could / wished to turn To Entice an Earl and the Entangled Nobility series into a movie, who would be your dream team?

"Miss Alexandra Farris – Alexis Bledel. Her eyes are spot on for Alexa’s, and she has a very similar first name. Only drawback - she’d have to gain some weight.

Lord Maxon Collins – Joseph Morgan from The Originals. I have a mini crush on him, so that helped sway my decision.

Lord Edwin (the villain) – Robert Pattinson. He’d make a good bad guy.

Miss Victoria Cannis (Alexa’s best friend) – Kate Mara. I love her eyes.

And lastly, music. Whoever did the soundtrack for the 2003 Pride and Prejudice. I love that music, it’s really the only soundtrack I’ve ever taken note of."

His name is Dario Marianelli, an Italian film composer.

What do you like to write and read about? Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?

"I write and read Regency romances. Sometimes I’ll get crazy and read a vampire novel, or a western but typically I read within that particular sub-genre.

So far, I’ve only written Regencies, but part of me would really enjoy writing a historical romance set in my home state of South Dakota. We shall see."

What is your writing process?

"My writing process is horribly unproductive. I write the novel. Then, I revise. Then, I edit. Then revise some more. Then, edit.

This goes on and on until I am happy, and then I edit until I can’t take it anymore. It makes me want to become a plotter but I’m a pantser at heart."

What is in store next?

"I can, but I will warn you, there’s a spoiler in what I reveal.

My next novel is the final installation in my Entangled Nobility series. Miss Victoria Cannis gets compromised and will soon wed the villain from To Entice an Earl *gasp*. Fortunately for her, Lord Edwin’s brother is a side character who comes to her rescue. Simply put, I can’t wait to finish this novel. I love it."

And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you that you could share with us?

"I have a dog named Milo. He is an Australian Shepherd, Yellow Lab mix and is the most stubborn dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

He’s also extremely loyal to me. He won’t leave my side and listens solely to me. I think Milo wants to protect me from everything, which means he can never let me out of sight. It’s quite endearing, except for when he runs into me because he follows a little too close."
