Synopsis

Sean Johnson’s life as a small-town farmhand has been nothing but predictable, but when he meets Sophia Hillingdon at the local animal sanctuary, she gets him out of an eighteen-year rut, away from the mundane existence on the farm, and a grieving, drunken father.

Sophia is the first person who understands him and makes him believe that he might get out of their small town, who tells him, he has the potential to be whoever he wants to be and do whatever he wants to do.

But as their relationship unfolds, it is the most devastating of news that will change both of them forever.

Quick-Fire Q&A with Hugo

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
"Fruits of the forest. If you ever go to Italy and try it, you’ll taste buds will be in heaven."
Which mythological creature are you most like?
"I wasn’t quite sure, so I took a BuzzFeed test, and it told me I was a fairy because I’m positively enchanting! BuzzFeed is always right, after all…"
First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.
"I can’t remember which one exactly, but I was hooked on the Goosebumps stories around 8-10. I remember being enamored by the gore and horror of the writing, and my mum would read them to my brother and I before bed with only a torch shining down on the pages."
How do you develop your plot and characters?
"There’s no detailed plot development. I don’t draw maps of mythical worlds before I start. Nor do I write 5,000 words concerning the character’s lives. Once a story comes to me, the first thing I do is compile an effective beginning, middle and end. Once I can provide a few paragraphs for the arc of each chapter, I shift focus to my characters until I’m confident enough to describe them to others without looking at my notes."
Describe your writing space.
"I’ve been writing in my local café for years. I find the clanking of mugs and gurgles from the machines oddly therapeutic. I can’t write in a library. The silence reminds me too much of school. At home, I can often edit, but If I’m going to write unique content, I need to get out of the house otherwise I feel too boxed in. "
