Chapter Two
“What’s the hurry?” asked Clementina, trying some dangling platinum earrings, which she had paired with the platinum necklace she was considering. “The blinds are closed— they’re not getting any more pictures.”
“There are more coming,” I said. “More people, more risk, more trouble.”
She ignored my concern and snapped another selfie with her phone. “I need to know what Piedad thinks about these before we go anywhere.”
“Piedad?” I knew it was the wrong response as the name fell out of my mouth. Clementina ignored me, turning her gaze to seek out the fastidious and highly attentive man who had been fluttering around her. She found him and sent him scurrying on another errand, shortly to return.
She looked at his offering and firmly shook her head. He disappeared again, forcing a smile before he left.
There was was an electronic trill, and Clementina reached for her phone while keeping another dangly piece of metal held to hear earlobe. “Has Piedad given her approval?” I asked.
Clementina seemed to ignore me, but then lowered the jewelry and looked to her phone. “She has.”
“Good,” I said. “Can we go? We’ll come back at some other time when there are no paparazzi around.”
“Paparazzi?” she asked. I had her attention— apparently there was a life lesson I needed to learn. “Paps, Leathan. We call them paps.”
I tried not to sigh as she turned away. “We’ll come back at some other time when there are no paps around. Can we go now?”
“I’m getting this.” She waved something— it might have been the necklace— and then proceeded to dive into the large bag she had dragged with her. When she didn’t find what she was searching for, she started emptying the bag on the counter— makeup; purses and pouches; tissues, both fresh and crumpled; receipts and other pieces of paper; three handkerchiefs, one white, one cream, and one black with a lace border, all scattered across the glass surface.
The attentive little man returned with another tray. She ignored his offering and passed him the necklace. “I’ll take this.” He took the necklace and picked up its box, which was lost under the flow of waste from Clementina’s bag, and with his tray in the other hand momentarily disappeared from view.
She found her credit card and proceeded to reload her bag, with a single arm movement scooping the mess spread over the counter back into the large leather piece of high fashion, and then moved farther along the counter, handing her chief servant the plastic.
He said something. I didn’t hear clearly, but I was sure he said, “Fifteen thousand euros.” She made a small squeak of agreement and within a few moments was handed a glossy bag far larger than seemed necessary for a necklace.
“Ready?” she asked, turning to me. “What are we waiting for?” It was a combination of self-awareness and cheek that only a seventeen-year-old could pull off with such equanimity.
“Shall I take your jacket?” I replied, picking the soft leather from the carpet before taking my first steps behind the counter without asking for permission. When Clementina began to follow, I looked to the highly attentive man, who was probably still busy calculating his commission on the sale. “Show us how to get out the back.”

ReplyDeleteThank you, Melissa.
DeleteCongrats on the tour and thanks for the chance to win :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lisa.
DeleteWhat do you like to do when you're not writing?
ReplyDeleteIf I'm not writing (and not outlining or attending to the business aspects of writing), then I want my brain to disengage. And to disengage, I tend toward passive activities (watching TV, reading) or activities that distract (hanging out with family and friends).
ReplyDeleteReally great teaser, I enjoyed reading it. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, Victoria.
