Teaser: Excerpt
Cassandra, now a tall twenty-two-year-old with curly black hair and a caramel complexion, is sitting on a couch with Brittani, a woman of the same age with short brown hair. They are in a trendy, West Village-type apartment, wrapping up Brittani's glasses and packing them in cardboard boxes.
“Time has passed so quickly,” Cassandra says. She is wearing large diamond earrings, a butterfly necklace, and trendy Cachel clothing. “I can't believe we've already graduated from the Fashion Academy. It seems like we just moved here yesterday.”
“Yeah,” Brittani says. “I can't wait to move to Cali. The condo Daddy bought me is gorgeous.”
“It goes perfectly with your brand-new Jeep.”
“I know,” Brittani says. “It's so beautiful. I can't wait to drive cross-country in it.” She gets up, walks over to the window, and peers outside at her parked Jeep Wrangler. She is wearing a short designer miniskirt and a low-cut blouse. “God! I just can't stop looking at it.”
“To think, next week, I'll be the president of Cachel legendary fashions,” Cassandra says. “It's so exciting. I'm going to be one of the richest women in the world.”
“White is just so me. This car is perfect,” Brittani says.
Cassandra puts the last mug away in the box. She gets up from the couch and walks into the bathroom. The bathroom door is open. Brittani walks back over to the couch and tapes up the box.
“So, what are you doing this afternoon?” Brittani asks.
“Nothing much. I'll probably stay in and work on some sketches.”
“Oh!” Brittani says. “Well, I'm going shopping with Melissa today.”
Cassandra comes out the bathroom and is brushing her hair. Her eyebrows started to crunch together. “Really? Where are you guys going?”
“I'm not sure, probably Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.” Brittani stops to think for a moment. “Do you want to come?” she asks.
Cassandra walks back into the bathroom, wondering how genuine the invitation is. “Maybe. For an eighteen-year-old, Melissa has a lot of opinions,” she says.
Brittani walks over to the kitchen area. Cassandra’s cell phone rings. Brittani answers it. “Hello …yes. Hold on. It's for you.”
“Obviously!” Cassandra laughs.
“Hello,” Cassandra says. “Hi, how are you? Fine. Yes. Really? Well…uh, are you sure? We have a team of designers. Some have worked for various top designers. All of their credentials are in the business plan. You had eight months to review it thoroughly and assess the risks involved. No. Actually, I don't understand. We had a verbal agreement. Really! Well, I don't know what type of Cracker Jack lawyer you have, but on several occasions you agreed to the stipulations in the contract. I know you didn't sign the damn thing, which is why I had to change Cachel's showroom’s opening date twice. You know what, I'll go over it with my lawyer and I'll get back to you.”
She hangs up the phone.
“What happened?” Brittani asks.
The doorbell rings. Brittani answers the door. Cassandra sits on the couch. Melissa, an eighteen-year-old woman with long, perfectly straight black hair, is at the doorway. She is wearing a bright, gaudy Betsey Johnson crop top and a fitted pair of high-rise jeans. Quite risky, but she has just the right attitude to kind of pull it off.
“Kisses, girls!” she says.
Brittani and Melissa touch cheeks and make kissing sounds, a most unusual greeting for cousins by Cassandra’s standards. Melissa walks over to the couch and sits down. “Hey Cassandra! How are you, girly girl?” she asks.
Cassandra holds her tears back.
“What happened?” Brittani asks. “Who was that?”
“That was Mr. Phillips, the main investor in Cachel. He backed out of the deal.”
“What? He can’t do that,” Brittani says. “Didn't you have some type of contract?”
“We had a verbal agreement. And for about six months, he's been holding on to the investment contract. He's been having his lawyer redraw it to suit his needs. He sent it back to me a couple of times and I had to ask for a few things to be changed that seemed unreasonable in terms of profit distribution and decision making. I thought we still had a deal. We are at contract!”
“So what are you going to do?” Melissa asks.
“I don’t know.” A silence falls over the room. “Without his investment, I can't open Cachel,” Cassandra says.
“You should just ask your parents for money,” Melissa says.
“Yeah. Whenever I need something, I just ask my Dad,” Brittani chimes in.
“I can’t. It's not that simple. My parents are retiring soon. I don't want to burden them. They’d probably have to mortgage their house for this”
“Listen,” Melissa says. “I know a supermodel, Milan, who goes to my school. She’s on the cover of Rogue this month. Super sweet. I’m sure if you two met she would help you out. The question is, What would you do with that? I mean, Milan could totally put you on the map. And if she does, what would you do for me?”
Cassandra stands there, thinking. How forward is this?, she wonders.
“I don’t know. I mean, celebrity endorsement and getting a supermodel to even do a social media campaign could be amazing. What would you want for that?”
“I don’t know. Maybe be in charge of your social media and press campaign.”
“That is insane. This is my life, not a movie. What do you know about social media and the press?”
“Umm. Just think about it, Cassandra. My aunt is a PR exec,” Brittani says.
“Listen, I have over 200,000 followers on the Gram. Plus I have my own T-shirt line out of a showroom downtown my mom hooked me up with. We are going to be in Urban and Bloomies next quarter. I know a little something about the fashion biz. Don’t sleep on this, girly girl, Cassandra. Ambition has no age! B, it’s 12:45. We have to go,” Melissa says.
“I have a 1:30 hair appointment with Franz,” she tells Cassandra. “I want to go to Bloomingdale’s. Oh! And I think Neiman Marcus has a new line I want to scope out.”
Brittani and Melissa walk to the door.
“Like, last week, my mother told me that I was invited to her obnoxious friend's birthday party,” Brittani says. “So now I need a new dress.”
Melissa opens the door and walks out. “Eww! I hate when my parents make me go to their lame friends’ parties like I have no life. So waiting for college…”
“I am out of college and I still have this problem. Wait!” Brittani says. She turns to Cassandra. “Sure you don't want to come?”
“I’ll pass,” Cassandra says. She curls up on the couch, feeling slightly depressed.
“Bye-bye!” Melissa and Brittani leave.
