Synopsis

In a broken America, seventeen-year old Iolani Bearse encounters a world full of wonder and danger.

Lani discovers a secret: houseflies have magic.

Stealers have no mercy.

Armed with memory-draining lanterns, the stone-cold hunters relentlessly follow catastrophes, laying traps, preying on the weak.

Together with her father, Eleanor, Sam, and Mango, her beloved pinto mare, Lani rescues victims from the grasp of Memory Stealers. One by one, she saves whomever she can, looking for any path that leads to safety.

When her family’s farmhouse is attacked, Lani must act quickly to save those she loves.

Can Lani unmask their powerful, hidden enemies before the flies’ magic fails and everything burns to ashes?

Will the loss of one of her greatest friends become her downfall?

Can Lani overcome the evil that is tearing her world apart, flying blind?

"How many are left in  your neighborhood?"  I asked, ignoring his question for the moment.  Sometimes, I learned a few gems that way.  Mostly, I got the answer I grew weary hearing: None.  The memory stealers were so exact, so efficient that very few ever escaped their harvest.

Witnesses didn't have to disappear.  They just forgot everything, including their own name.

Including how to breathe.

----------------

I could see the mother's confusion warring with her hunger.  I could see the boys, hesitant and starving.

The tired family tried to understand.
Events moved too fast for them.
Brilliant green lights pulled at their minds - the stealing began.
Mother and littlest boy were out in front, hands out, holding the free soup.

Nothing in this world is ever, ever free.  Remember that.

----------------

There should have been sounds.
This place was full of the crazies.
The screamers and the jello lickers wouldn't have stopped, not for nothing.

"Can you hear it?"  Cheesie whispered.
Al didn't know.  The green light: it was familiar.
"I have seen tat light before.
I have seen it before, Cheesie.  I know that light.  I know it -"  They looked at each other.
Then, Cheesie and Al slowly backed away from the hollow door.
Green light filtered underneath it.

Death stood outside.

----------------

Part of me wanted to jump through the flies' pattern.  Part of me wanted to beg her, to look into her eyes and have one of our nation's brightest leaders deny her words.  The ones that still burned in my ears.
Inside my spinning thoughts emerged another possibility: I might have to stop Senator Kiehl.
She might become my enemy.
Maybe, she already was?
And she knew everything about me.
She sent the truck full of supplies.  The farm.  She knows the farm.
Did she know about the people I have already rescued? The stealer orphans?

If I had any heart left, it would have broken.

Instead, like the soldier my father had been, like the warrior I was, I started making alternative plans.

----------------

Fly eggs sparkled.
Freedom was a flower that promised to bloom for me, and soon.
But Agent Kyle spoke the truth.

Gingerly, I felt my eyeball, looking left, looking right and blinking, blinking.
I searched inside of me for the implant, for the way in which the government had decided to track my every move, to own every bit of my life.
I cried.  My vision blurred and refocused.
There is always a way, something I can do, some way free of this technology that spied for them.

My own body used as a leash, binding me tight to the wish of unknown masters.

Flying Away [1]

When Iolani Bearse was five years old, she lost her father to war. When she was nine, her mother died in a freak car accident. When Lani was fourteen, eerie green lights invaded, tearing her from the only home she had left.

Living as a runaway, dragging a horse and her cousin Eleanor across the countryside, Lani must learn to survive. Now Lani is the only person between the horrible, greedy lights and the last bit of family she has left. Her own heart is barely beating, but powerful memories pull her to Malcolm St. John. She fights what she feels, buried deep within her shattered soul.

Malcolm St. John always held his feelings in, especially about Iolani. So when she shows up on his doorstep, desperate and determined, Mal must decide if the wild tales she spins are the fragments of insanity or the last hope for a dying nation. This Lani is different from the child he knew. Something is coming for her, for him, and will not be stopped

If the cousins and Malcolm can’t escape the grasping hunters who hound them, the future of a broken America will be destroyed. Everything Lani has ever loved will burn with them. Somehow, she must find a path through friendship and loyalty to save them all.

About the Author

Unusual stories attract me, ones in which the reader cannot easily see the ending or most of the journey.

Visiting Rome during university studies, I found a simple truth sitting on buses, traveling all over the ancient city: the joy is in the Journey, in the people I meet, not in the destination.

So, I write for you.  I write for sanity.  I write for chocolate and really good pizza.
