Synopsis

Everybody has the awesome opportunity to find their own strength and path through life. Some come about their self-discoveries through studying and working hard. Others (Chelsea) spend their time nearly burning down kitchens and driving around the country with a car full of hangers.

Chelsea grew up wanting to be “strong.” She thought arguing her way through childhood and becoming a world-class attorney would get her there. But, through a series of humorous, and only slightly embarrassing events, Chelsea comes to realize that maybe her strength is meant to shine in different ways.

Spoiler alert: This book is secretly going to brainwash you into home birthing your children. No, I’m not kidding.

Alternate possible titles for this book:

- How to Keep Your Pride Intact When Butterflies Attack
- When Life Hands You Lemons, Just Eat Them Straight Up to Watch Your Popularity at Parties Sky Rocket
- 17 Reasons Why I’m Cooler than My Mom

- I Always (Start With the Best Intentions to) Follow Directions

Teaser: Excerpt

“I tried to contain my excitement when my second grade teacher announced that our school’s Professional Day was coming up and we were all encouraged to dress up as what we wanted to be when we grew up. Now, just try to picture what your local veterinarian looks like and what they might wear on a daily basis to stand out from other occupations. You can’t, right?
Some parents had it easy; I mean how hard is it to make your child look like a firefighter or a member of middle management? My poor mom had a bigger task at hand. That’s why my costume ended up including a white bathrobe which I think was supposed to be a labcoat and an old pair of tortoise-shell sunglasses (lenses removed). In one hand I carried one of my million stuffed animals and in the other, a clipboard. I’m not entirely sure how a clipboard was going to prove that I was a veterinarian, but I was confident that if the clipboard didn’t give it away, the broken sunglasses definitely would. In a low childhood moment for me, not a single person - student or teacher - could guess what I was.
Even with the setback, I still knew I’d be the world’s best vet. My favorite animals by far were cats. To give you an idea of how in love with cats I was, imagine the person or thing that you love more than life itself, and then times that love by 100. I think it’s fair to use the word obsessed.

Author Q&A

What are four things you can’t live without?
  1. My tea drawer. I love tea and I love buying tea.  My poor husband, he’s constantly trying to clean out my tea drawer because it’s got about a billion types of tea in there. Plus, I love loose-leaf tea, so there’s dried little plants all over the bottom of the drawer from the tea containers my toddler loves tipping over.  The leaves are usually stuck to the bottom by the honey that’s also in my drawer, that my toddler also likes tipping over.  It’s a glorious mess.
  2. My water bottle collection.  I can’t go to a store without buying a new water bottle.  I don’t know.
  3. My cowboy boots.  I’m not a fan of country music or country dancing and I’ve never even been to Texas, but when I put my cowboy boots on, everything feels right in my urban world.  Plus, I always get great compliments on them, which doesn’t hurt.
  4. My handmade leather bracelet.  We went to a silent auction one time where I almost got in a fist-fight with some other lady over the bidding of this bracelet.  My friends made me back down and I sadly didn’t end up getting it.  But, my sweet husband secretly got the artist’s name and asked her to commission one just for me for Christmas one year!  Isn’t that the best?
What is your favorite television show?
"I’m on the fifth season of 30 Rock right now and am ashamed that it took me so long to discover that show.  It’s hilarious.  I’m already looking forward to starting back at Season 1 Episode 1 the second I finish the series.  I think I could watch it on an endless loop for the rest of my life."
If you could be any character, from any literary work, who would you choose to be? Why?
"Winnie the Pooh.  Hands down.  He gets away with having great friends, playing outside all the time, and always eating honey.  How bad could that be?"

What have you got coming soon for us to look out for?

"I’ve got a handful of stories I’m prepping for a second enthrallment of I’d Rather Wear Pajamas.  Maybe the motherhood version?  I’m also psyched to be working on some children’s books - both picture books, and early chapter books.  With three small girls around my house, we do a ton of reading and I’d love to see more uplifting, funny stories out there about the bond of sisterhood!  Can I get an amen? "
What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?
"Wow, this interview is a total love fest on Tina Fey.  Her book [Bossypants] was definitely on my nightstand the entire time I was writing I’d Rather Wear Pajamas.  She’s seriously the best.  If I could die and come back reincarnated as someone, it would be Tina Fey.  Is that creepy?  Did I just reveal myself as a creepy fan?  I love reading funny blogs and memoirs to help me with my own comedic phrases and timing.  Think Amy Poehler, Jenny Lawson, and Kermit the Frog."

    3. LOL - you just didn't train him well enough ;-)
My partner had never had a pet before... we currently live with seven cats... he is a cat bed! :-P
      Daughters are great though!

And I get the tea drawer... I have two! :-D (and a selection of loose leaf tins and flowering tea - of course!)

    4. I love it! That's hilarious. You're right...I need to work harder on the cat thing. Luckily, my daughter's are starting to get in on it too and he has a really hard time resisting their little puppy dog-eyed pleas ;)
Around this time of year, my teas start spilling out into various other places in my kitchen for sure. It's the best!

I am the cat bed mentioned above, but did have a couple of pets (budgies and a cockatiel) but nothing a mischievous as a kitty or several. ;-p

  5. I found the post very entertaining, and I especially loved the "Winnie the Pooh" comment. I thought I loved Winnie, but I never wished to be him. You have me beat.
