Return HomeTHE VIEW FROM MARSFLIGHT-12 took Mickey’s breath away. He positioned extra cushions behind his neck as he readied himself for the advancing celestial event. The star-flight from Mars was approaching Skydome after a six month voyage. As the vast void of space momentarily darkened from the solar eclipse, Earth’s thin, blue atmosphere put on a radiant show. He had missed Earth’s natural aquatic hues. He then reminisced for a moment, to his home of the last ten years, living on another planet. On Mars, a red glow lit up the morning skyline as it danced with the Martian dust filled atmosphere. It was this eternal dance between light and gravity and his innate ability to decipher their patterns that made him who he was today. Then, the Earth’s moon completely covered the sun, bar the smallest of areas, creating what looked like a celestial diamond ring. Mickey decided to capture the occasion on his cubebit
“Com, fix me a real time video capture of the lunar eclipse.” Com – the solar system computer command system-automatically captured the eclipse on Mickey’s cubebit. A default view twenty centimetre holographic cube lit up above his hand-held cubebit, providing Mickey a high resolution view of the celestial event.
“Enhance view to double size, Com.” The holograph doubled in size, giving him a more detailed view.
“Automatic ret filters too.” Mickey’s retina implants were set to filter light to an acceptable level as the sun’s rays changed in intensity.
He delighted in the beauty of the eclipse. The diamond ring shape reminded Mickey of how he saw the balls on a cube. Mickey had an innate ability to read the roll of spherical objects in a cubeball cube. When he played well, every ball he intended to strike with the cue-ball, lit up in his mind, on the exact point where he intended to hit it. Then gravity would do its work. That’s what he loved about cubeball - the perfection of gravity.
He also appreciated his upgraded cubebit. The Alpha-D9 provided a high digital resolution that could screen real-life holographic images from as small as a matchbox to as large as a room. He watched the moon move across the sun and wondered where he would be by the time of the next eclipse. Uncertainty was filling his life again.
