Confessions Of A Queen B*
Review | About the author | Teaser | Queen B* Strikes Back |

"Alexis Wyndham is the other type of Queen B—the Queen Bitch.

After years of being the subject of ridicule, she revels in her ability to make the in-crowd cower via the exposés on her blog, The Eastline Spy.  Now that she's carved out her place in the high school hierarchy, she uses her position to help the unpopular kids walking the hallways.

Saving a freshman from bullies?   Check.

Swapping insults with the head cheerleader?   Check.

Falling for the star quarterback?   So not a part of her plan.

But when Brett offers to help her solve the mystery of who’s posting X-rated videos from the girls’ locker room, she’ll have to swallow her pride and learn to see past the high school stereotypes she’s never questioned—until now. "

"Confessions Of A Queen B*" is a young adult coming-of-age novel by Crista McHugh; the first of a three part series which follows Alexis Wyndham during the last few months of her senior year of high school when she falls for Brett Pederson, the star quarterback and is therefore forced to re-evaluate what she has believed in so far and the persona the she has worked so hard to construct.

Is this book for you?  Well, if you are looking for a story full of scheming females and bitchiness, à la "Mean Girls"  or "Heathers", this is not it.  Think more along the lines of "10 Things I Hate About You".

The narration is wholly from Alexis' point of view, in the first person.  It is all about her, her feelings, her thoughts and perceptions, and it focuses on her relationship with Brett.  The timeline is linear, with the exception of the snippets from The Eastline Spy at the beginning of each chapter which are from Alexis' sophomore year, and spans about a two weeks period.

Confessions of a Queen B* is a fast light-hearted read, which touches on quite a few serious topics in the life of a teenager on the cusp of adulthood.  It is a tale of growth, and as such often the character's actions will not make much sense, but then again at that age they seldom do!  As infuriating as they might be, it adds realism to the story and authenticity to its characters.

As a minor niggle, at times the writing felt a little repetitive, for instance Alexis referring to their health assignment as "becoming the bane of [her] existence" - although this was only mentioned twice, it was done word for word.

Overall, funny, well written and thought-through.  I look forward to the next instalment, 'The Queen B* Strikes Back'.
