"The initial spark for “Joni, Underway” began when Jonathan and I were watching “Deadliest Catch”, that show about lobster fishermen.  That whole world is so foreign to us suburban folk, and Jonathan said, “Gosh, what if a city guy like me had to go work on one of these boats?” It would be a life changing experience. That sparked an instant comparison to “City Slickers,” a movie we’ve always loved.

"It came from out of left field, actually.  Years ago, I was riding in a car with my parents, who are both writers and who constantly pitch stories and ideas to me.  My mom turned around from the passenger seat and said, “I have an idea for you for a kids’ book: Vampires playing football.”  I immediately rejected it, thinking undead bloodsuckers were overdone at that point, but the image of a vampire floating into the air to catch a football stuck with me and out of it grew a tale of a boy who suddenly discovered he could throw a football fast and far … and a friend who could leap 10 feet in the air and catch a pass.  None of those characters, however, turned out to be vampires."

"I am a huge fan of fairy tales and I wanted to put my own spin on a classic.   That classic was The White Cat by Madame D’Aulnoy but once I started writing it evolved and became something entirely different but that’s great because it means readers don’t get the same old thing re-hashed."
