Synopsis

“Sending you an SOS.”

When psychic Trudy Tucker hears this plaintive cry in her mind and then connects psychically with a little girl’s kidnapper, she is drawn to a small town in Missouri where everyone is suspect – including herself and her lover, celebrated psychic detective Levi Wolfe. As she and Levi work together to sort through whom and what to trust, an innocent life hangs in the balance.

Teaser: Excerpt

A shudder raced through her and her stomach knotted. Nausea rose up to her throat as darkness descended in her mind.

“I’m sending you an SOS. Sending you an SOS. An SOS.” Can you find me? Can you hear me?

“I hear you,” Trudy whispered, answering the small, trembling voice.

“Did you say something, Rachel? Are you singing something?” This was a different voice in her head. A deep bass, but gentle. Coaxing, cajoling, cunning.

The darkness parted like a curtain in Trudy’s mind and Rachel came into view. She sat in a child’s white rocking chair, her red tennis shoes dangling inches from the floor. A wedge of purple discolored her right cheek. Her lips twitched and her chin quivered.

“Be a good girl and do what you’re told and that won’t happen to you again. No one wants to hurt you. You gotta obey, though. Can’t say ‘no’ to your elders. Your mama should have taught you that.”

“It hurts.”

“Want me to kiss it and make it well?”

Rachel rounded her shoulders, making herself smaller. “Nuh-uh.”

“Okay then. I could make it stop hurting though . . . I’ll read you a Bible story. How about that? Remember what we talked about? God is way up here . . . then there’s his disciples right here . . . and then your elders . . . and you’re way down below that.”

Glimpses of hands . . . moving up and down, illustrating the levels. Dirty nails, dry skinned knuckles.

“Where’s Mommy?”

“Are you hearing me? This is important.”

“I want to talk to Mommy.”

“She doesn’t want to talk to you! God gave you to us. Your Mommy is busy serving the Lord and now you’re here serving us because it’s been ordained. Quit touching your face! That won’t help it heal. Come sit in my lap while I read. Did you hear me ask nice? You won’t like it if I have to ask twice. That’s my good girl. You act like this all the time and you won’t get any more boo-boos.”

Was he kissing her? Was he licking her?

Author Q&A

Do you ever wish you were someone else?
"Often, I wish I was one of my characters. They know their lines and they live exciting lives! When I was writing the Mind’s Eye series, I often would wish I could actually be Trudy and go a round or two with Levi Wolfe! As it is with most writers, all of my characters have a piece of me in them, but the heroines are usually more like me than other characters. They share my hopes, dreams, passions, and self-doubts. But they’re much prettier than me and not as sharp-tongued as I tend to be, although they are sassy! They are a better me, so it’s understandable why I would wish to be one of them every so often."
What did you do on your last birthday?
"I was working on a novel and my guy was out of town. But, lo and behold, he had a birthday cake delivered by taxi to my door along with a bouquet of flowers. It was very sweet and totally unexpected."
What part of the writing process do you dread?
"Thinking of a good plot and believable and sustainable conflict! That’s what I’m doing now for the next novel I have planned. The thinking and casting aside and thinking and crossing out and thinking! Aaagggrh! It’s like building a structure out of blocks, only to knock it down over and over again because it’s too wobbly. I’m usually anxious to get to writing, but I know if I don’t take the time to really think through the plot and characters, it will bite me in the backside and I’ll end up having to do massive rewrites or start over altogether. So, the beginning process of plotting is tedious, but necessary."
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
"No, I’ve never had writer’s block. I’ve had “I want to kill my editor” block and “I want to slap myself silly” block, but I always have ideas for books floating about in my head. I did go through a long period when I was tired of writing what I was writing, but I didn’t realize it until I read the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy. Those books opened my eyes and made me see that I had been in a rut and they blasted me out of it. They lit a fire under me and made me excited about writing novels again."

"THROUGH HIS HEART is the third book in the Mind’s Eye series. These began as a trilogy, but I’m leaving the door open for more of them because I haven’t finished getting to know my main characters – Trudy Tucker and Levi Wolfe. When I created this series and these characters, I did so with the aim to make them complex because they would be in three entire novels. Well, I think I made them so complex that I’ve barely scratched the surface of them in the three books.

This series packs in a lot of plot elements. Trudy is psychic and can channel murderers, kidnappers, and other evil people. She sees through their eyes, but has little control over how it happens and when it happens. Levi is also psychic, but he channels the deceased. So he can commune with the dead victims of crimes. Together, they can investigate both the perpetrator and his/her victims. Trudy is just starting out and learning to harness her psychic abilities. Levi is a well-known psychic and a successful entrepreneur. He works with Trudy the first time in Book 1, although he’s had his eye on her for almost a year. There is an instant attraction between them that leads to a sizzling hot sexual connection. But Levi has a lot of hang-ups because of his traumatic upbringing, and Trudy isn’t willing to settle for only knowing the emotional parts of him he’s willing to show her.

Each novel deals with a different case they’re investigating. "
