Hello Patricia, thank you for joining us on BooksChatter.

What was the inspiration for your latest book, A Thin Slice of Heaven?

"The inspiration actually came from a love of two books.  The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is a favorite book, but I always wanted the Captain and Mrs. Muir’s relationship to go further than it did.  And What Dreams May Come inspired me to write page-turning books, regardless of the genre.

This was a very different type of book than those I’ve written in the past, because I went where I’d never gone before—into the realm of life after death and that thin veil that separates us."
I know you have written a very nice post on your blog about What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson, hence I have shared it.  That books was also turned into a film with Robin Williams, which I must admit I have never seen...

The first thing that draws me to a book is its cover. Can you tell us about your cover for A Thin Slice of Heaven - why you chose that concept and who the artist is.

"The cover was taken from an actual photograph, and I’m afraid I don’t recall the photographer’s name.  The editors wanted to depict the castle high atop a ridge in the middle of winter.  Charleigh, the main character, finds herself staying in the castle alone because a snow storm has prevented the other guests from reaching the remote destination.  Her room is in the turret, and most of the action takes place inside the castle as it comes alive with spirits from centuries past."
Why should we read A Thin Slice of Heave and what sets it apart from the rest?
"I’ve never read a book quite like this one before; it’s been said that there are no new plots, only different ways of telling them, but readers have told me when they reached the end of the book and found out what was really happening they turned back to the beginning and read it all over again.

I researched life after death: accounts of people who had clinically died and were resuscitated and people who underwent hypnosis to recall previous lives and even the world between them. I also researched hospice care and the three stages of dying.  To wrap all of this up in a love story was an experience I’ll never forget.  People who have lost loved ones have told me they have turned to the book countless times for comfort, as Sean explains to Charleigh how none of us never truly die."
Can you tell us something quirky about A Thin Slice of Heaven, its story and characters?
"I named the ghost of the castle Sean Bracken, because his ancestors came to Ireland from Scotland and I thought that was a good name.  I named the castle Brackenridge, because it sits atop a high ridge about fifty miles west of Belfast.

After I’d written the first draft, my sister journeyed to Ireland and found that our ancestors were from a small village about fifty miles from Belfast.  They were the Laird and Lady of Glencull, having been given the land by the British monarchy, just as the castle had been in my book.  And when we traced our ancestors back to Scotland, we found they came from a region close to Brackenridge, Scotland."
Who would you recommend your book to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?
"Well, the romance is hot.  And it’s between a woman and a ghost.  If you love a good ghost story and you love romance that spans centuries, if you believe in soul mates and how everything happens for a reason, and if you’re interested in the paranormal—carefully researched—this book is for you."
What do you like to write and read about?  Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?
"I’ve written books in several genres: creative non-fiction, technical non-fiction, contemporary suspense, historical suspense, and paranormal.  And I have to say that I enjoy the paranormal the most.  There is something about delving beyond our five senses that intrigues me.

My favorite books to read are romantic suspense and paranormal romance, though I also enjoy true adventure. "
What is in store next?
"A Thin Slice of Heaven was my 19th release, and my 20th and 21st books are in the production cycle now for release in 2016 and 2017.  They are the (as-yet-untitled) next books in the Black Swamp Mysteries Series and the Ryan O’Clery Mystery Series, respectively.  I am also researching the three brothers who left Ireland in the early 1700’s for America; one of them was my ancestor.  I will be writing a trilogy based on their adventures."
