Synopsis

Fear is a powerful emotion that finds its way into the mind of everyone. It’s manipulative and controlling. It can paralyze you and make you do things you wouldn’t normally do. It will sink its teeth into you and won’t let you go without a fight.

For Justin Ackers, fear became a reality when he decided to walk home from work. After taking a shortcut to his apartment, Justin found himself entering a world of trouble. He was surrounded by a gang of thugs that was out for blood, his blood.

The nightmare replayed for months rendering Justin incapable of leaving the apartment. The mere thought of going outside brought on panic attacks that brought on horrible memories. Now he confines himself in the safety of his apartment, and is forced to watch the world go on without him.

Entry 1-February 21st, 2013

Let it be known that this was not my decision to write this. It was something I was forced into it by my therapist. She told me it would help me deal with my issues, to work through the traumatic events that drove me to therapy in the first place. I think it’s a load of bullshit. I went to the stupid sessions. I was even going three times a week, but they were a waste of time. I never got anything out of them. I would sit there for an hour at a time waiting for Dr. Mary Barron to tell me how to fix my life; how to “cope” with the horrific scene that was etched into my mind; rid myself of the nightmares that plagued me every night. But she never did any of that. Instead she sat there with a blank stare waiting for me to open up while continuously asking me “how does that make you feel?”

I hate that question. Every fiber of my body wants to scream how do you think it makes me feel? You’re the therapist. You should be able to tell me. Instead I sat there in disturbed silence; glaring at Dr. Barron and her scarlet rimmed glasses and her frizzy black hair that humorously reminded me of someone who had their finger stuck in a light socket. I couldn’t bear the thought of sitting in her office anymore. It’s why I decided to end my sessions completely.

Entry 2-March 2nd 2013

It happened again, another night where I relived the nightmare that infiltrates my thoughts and has ruined many blissful dreams. It’s the same one that plagued me since the incident. Every time I relive it, I wake up the same way, drenched in sweat, blankets and sheets kicked to one side of the bed, and the pillows gripped tightly in my hands as I curl up into a ball. The nightmares started right after the incident.

It was the late fall of 2010. I was walking home from work and stopped at a few stores on the way. The plastic shopping bags bit into my wrists and hands as I hurried to get back to my apartment. Nights in Brooklyn weren’t always the safest, and I had no business walking them that late at night. Sounds of metal gates and shutters scraping along the tracks in front of other stores had me coming undone with paranoia. They were closing for the night, not a good sign for me. Knowing I needed to get home faster, I decided to take a shortcut. It was a decision that would forever change my life.

About the Author

Andrew Hess is a resident of Long Island New York. He debuted his first book, Chamber of souls, in 2011. The Chamber was a unique free verse poetry book that depicted the struggles of man as he falls into his own self wallowing journey while struggling to find himself. Hess followed this up with another book of poetry which showed a much darker side called; Hall of the Forgotten.

Hess has a love for mystery novels which was apparent by him taking a stab at a fictional government conspiracy series; The Phoenix Blade. This series has taken readers by storm by showcasing a group of vigilante 20 year olds that have been hired by the government to rid the country of people that have evaded justice. The Phoenix Blade currently has released the third installment of the series and was awarded Best Series of 2014 by Indie Author Books.

Despite living most of his life on Long Island, Andrew also spent five years living in the Ulster and Dutchess County areas and returns several times a year. His return trips have inspired him to create another intense series depicting a female detective named Ali Ryan called, Campus Killer.

Hess is an avid blogger at TheWritersRevolution13.blogspot.com where he promotes and interviews other authors as well as reviewing books of all genres. He has partnered up with several companies to help showcase authors from all over the world.

Hess is also a frequent guest on the Anthony Charles Podcast, a show dedicated to creative professionals as they give insight into their works and the lives they lead; guests have included authors, comedians, musicians, stuntmen, actors and producers.
